Coaching simply works. Here’s evidence.

Things that irritate me:

Standing on an open platform. In the winter. Waiting for a train. ☹️

Dirk putting his monstrous bunch of keys directly on the wood of the dining room table. 😱

And people who believe coaching is “soft and fluffy”.

Something to do for “employee engagement”. After installing the football table and meditation pods.

🤷🏻‍♀️

Coaching is 100% about results.

And achievement.

And growth.

Most certified coaches use the GROW Coaching Model. And G stands for Goal.

1.️ It’s the first thing you work on. What’s your goal for the topic you selected? What result are you looking for? What’s your goal for this session?

2.️ And the second thing in a coaching session is looking back at your progress. What have you accomplished so far? How far are you from your goal? What do you need to do to reach it?

My coaching package has 8 coaching sessions. We spend the full first session deciding all the goals you want to achieve in the 90 days we work together. And we tick them off as we go through the sessions.

That’s the point of coaching: getting things done, changing, achieving, growing.

At the end of each session, I ask my coaching clients “What was the impact of this session for you?”

Here are a few answers they gave me:

“In the back of my mind I knew that managing upwards is something I should work on but I never dissected it and took the time to look at it. The session helped me to look deeper into this.”

“I’ve never had a coach before, was nervous. Feel confident now, and have actions to use at my next meeting with Snr. Exec in 30 minutes.”

“Feels really good, made me think, feel motivated. Rethinking my belief about success vs. hours of work.“

“I feel mentally better, I’m at a better place. I realise this could be easy. I have 3 things I can do now to make sure I do the reviews in time.”

“I now have two very good ways to build relationships with my team, and also aware of a ‘gremlin’ that’s been in the back of my mind.”

“I realise I have more control than I thought. I’d like to be more strategic and move away from operational tasks and I have a way to speak to my manager now.”

“Didn’t realise how much progress I’ve made on all 4 of my original objectives! Realise now how important it is to celebrate and close projects before moving on to the next project.”

“I didn’t know what to expect from the session, but the session helped me to find a lot of answers.”

You know how it is – it can take us a long time to change a situation. To let go of any unproductive and unhelpful beliefs we hold.

The topics we discussed were impacting the these leaders for years. Topics like:

🔖 Managing upwards and setting expectations with their leaders.

🔖 Pushing back on decisions made by the organisation and advocating for their teams.

🔖 Speaking up for themselves.

🔖 Implementing the strategy and vision they have during exeptional busy or challenging times.

🔖 Being comfortable with delegating.

🔖 Being comfortable with assertiveness and disagreeing with peers.

🔖 Saying no to projects they can’t manage at that moment.

🔖 Handling difficult relationships.

🔖 Helping the underperformers in their team.

🔖 Managing the process and motivation of the team during restructuring.

Most of the times, we solved these within one 60-minute coaching session. Some topics took longer but I don’t often have a coaching session where there isn’t a shift or change for a client.

And it’s not because I’m such a great coach – I am 😊 – but it’s because of the structure and science of coaching. It simply works.

I also make big steps when I get coached.

So, no. There’s nothing “soft” or “fluffy” about coaching. It brings results that often translates into revenue and money.

ps. when you coach your team, ask them this question at the end of the coaching session:

“What was the impact of the session for you?”

✔️ This helps them think back on the discussion and remind themselves of what they committed to do until the next coaching session.

✔️ It gives you a great indication of what was relevant for them. What made an impact on them. Where they had an a-ha moment.

✔️ And it shows them the value they get out of the coaching. They’ll be even more engaged and focused during coaching sessions with you. Because they see that they benefit from it.
